The Influences of Self-Perception and Experiences of Age Discrimination upon the Social Participation Among the Elderly: A Mediating Effect of Self-Efficacy

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examined the path model of the social participation among old adults and the mediating effects of self-efficacy. The research model hypothesized that the self-perception of the elderly and the discrimination against the elderly influence social participation of the elderly, and self-efficacy mediate between the two exogenous variables and the social participation of the elderly. The subjects were 1,122 old people(377 men, 745 women) who are over 60 years through 30 centers and facilities for the elderly in nationwide. Major findings are as following: First, the testing model demonstrated good fitness of the path analysis model. Second, the discrimination against the elderly did not influence social participation of the elderly directly but indirectly through self-efficacy. Third, the self-perception of the elderly influenced social participation of the elderly directly as well as indirectly through self-efficacy. Fourth, self-efficacy had mediating effects between the two exogenous variables and the social participation of the elderly. Concludingly, in order to encourage the social participation of korean elderly, a great deal of effort should be into self-efficacy of the elderly through the better improvement in social negative recognition for the elderly and discrimination against the elderly.
